Discipleship Groups

Discipleship groups or D-groups are made up of 3-5 people that gather weekly for the purpose of growing deeper in their relationships with Jesus. D-groups emphasize study, spiritual discipline, accountability, and replication in the context of life-on-life discipleship.




CHRIS KENDALL / Senior Pastor

Chris became the pastor of Oak City in late 2013 after serving as the church’s interim pastor. Oak City is a growing church focused on making disciples in the Seymour community. Chris desires to keep the gospel central to the message and methodology of Oak City life and ministry. His heart for evangelism and disciple-making are clear in his biblical teaching as well as his life practice.
Pastor Chris completed his Master’s of Divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary while planting the Midtown Bridge Church in the heart of Atlanta, GA. He and his bride Lauren are raising 3 adorable children: Jackson, Brooklynn and Norah Beth.

NATHAN HICKMAN / Worship Pastor

Nathan came to Oak City in late 2013 after serving as the church’s supply pastor before Pastor Chris was appointed Senior Pastor. In 2015, Nathan transitioned into leading worship. Nathan desires to keep the gospel and sound theology a focus through the worship experience each week. Nathan strives to offer a blended music selection to span generational preference. Nathan leads the sanctuary choir and praise team each week.
Nathan also serves as a band director at Sevier County High School. He is responsible for the marching, concert, and jazz bands. Prior to moving home to Seymour, Nathan and his family lived in Cookeville, TN for 11 years where he served as the band director at Prescott South Middle School and Assistant band director at Cookeville High School, in Cookeville, TN. During the time in Cookeville, Nathan also served as Associate Pastor for Worship and Teaching at West View Baptist Church and Senior Pastor at Poplar Springs Baptist Church.
Pastor Nathan completed his Bachelors Degree in Music Education at Tennessee Technological University, and Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Western Govenors Univeristy.. He and LeAnn are raising 4
children: Tali (the gymnast), Slade (the comedian), Gavin (the engineer), and Haddie (the princess).

CHRIS MORIARTY / Student Pastor

Chris became the student pastor of Oak City in late 2017. Today’s students are faced with many pressures and temptations that hinder their focus on Christ. Chris’ focus and heart is to teach students the TRUTH represented in God’s Word and to ensure this TRUTH is the foundation of their faith so there is no question when faced with worldly untruths.
Chris served as Student Pastor for 2+ years at Bethel Baptist Church Sevierville. He has a desire to reach our students for Christ by being involved with the local schools for ministry opportunities. He is also from the Seymour community where he graduated from SHS.
He and his wife April have 2 beautiful children (Parker and Zoe) who are as beautiful as their mommy and as silly as their daddy!

LORI WHITAKER / Children’s Ministry Director

Lori was introduced as the Children’s director for KidCity in December 2017.  She is passionate about Jesus and sharing Him with others.  Her desire is to see children come to have a personal relationship with Jesus at a young age.  Every child that comes to Oak City will be taught age appropriate lessons that will cultivate that relationship.

Lori holds a BA in Bible and a MS in Elementary Education.  She has over 12 years of classroom teaching experience.  She has served in various children’s ministries throughout her life such as children’s church, Awana’s leader, youth leader, and Sunday school teacher.  She looks forward to serving alongside all the faithful teachers and leaders in KidCity, and is thankful for the opportunity to serve in this capacity.
